Darley Moor Duathlon Race One – May 29th 2016
After a chilly start the weather was perfect for the first Darley Moor Duathlon of the year at Darley Moor Race Circuit near Ashbourne organised by Crazy Legs Events. This year the event included Tristar races for children aged between 9 and 14 as well as the sprint distance race for adults. It was great to see many familiar faces returning from last year.
The race consisted of two laps of the perimeter path for the runs and eight laps of the flat but exposed circuit on the bike with the Tristar races run over shorter distances.
As usual at Darley Moor the pace was fast from the start in all the races and some fast times were recorded with the competitors enjoying the chance to race on traffic free roads. Feedback afterwards was very positive with many of the field looking to return for the second race in the series on August 28th.
The men’s race was won by Joe Sweetnam-Powell who produced a fast first run, entering T1 with a lead of nearly a minute. By T2 Tom Hollins had taken the lead followed by four athletes within 20 seconds but Joe and a fast finishing David Brookes moved through on the second run to finish first and second with Tom third. Joe set the fourth fastest time recorded at Darley Moor – not bad in his first duathlon!
In the women’s race Jessica Kennedy came out of T1 just behind Joanne Bolton but pulled away on the bike and then held on during the second run to finish just over a minute clear with Gaynor Halford in third.
Age group course records were set by Tony Goodyear (M40-44), Paul Bayley (M55-59), Chris Proud (M70-74) and Joanne Bolton (F50-54).
Eleven young athletes competed in the Tristar races and impressed the organisers and spectators with their impressive attitude and some excellent performances. Toby Bush and Rosie King were first in the Tristar 1 race with Jacob Bush and Arabella King first in the Tristar 2/3 race. A special mention should go to Sam Sargeant who picked himself up after a nasty fall to finish second in the Tristar 1 race.
Thanks from the organisers to Eddie Nelson and the team at Darley Moor, all the marshals, Alfonso Jimenez from British Triathlon, JPK Sports Photography, Rick Pollard for the first aid cover and Elaine for providing sports massage. Crazy Legs Events hope to continue to build the Darley Moor event and look forward to August 28th.
